New contest seeks images on theme of black identity

April 21, 2021

A new competition invites entries from emerging black British photographers as part of The Power of__ Festival – an event which celebrates the power of Black identity and its enduring impact on British culture.

Entrants must submit four original images which best represent what the ‘Power of__Black Identity’ means to them.

The theme was designed to allow photographers to contribute to the ongoing narrative of black identity, with judges keen to see entries that showcase the power, vulnerability, courage, strength and beauty contained within the black community.

The overall winner will receive a Nikon Z Series camera and lenses of their choice (up to the value of £6000) plus the opportunity for professional development via 1-2-1 sessions at the Nikon School. Four mentoring sessions with the competition judges are included in the prize.

The winning photos will also be showcased at The Power of__Festival exhibition alongside some of the UK’s eminent black photographers, plus displayed on billboards across central London in September 2021.

The competition will run from Thursday 15th April 2021 and will be open for submissions up until 12am on Sunday, 09th May 2021. Entrants are required to submit four original works via the website, giving permission for these to be exhibited at the festival. The overall winner will be notified by 18 May 2021.

The judging panel includes Neil Kenlock, acknowledged as being ‘at the forefront of documenting the black experience in the UK’, (Fashion) Minority Report founder Daniel Peters and Elizabeth Ellis, Marketing and Events at Nikon.
